I'm just going to take a wild guess that it was drug related or she grew up and moved on. He did a lot of drugs with Kate Moss. It was his most reckless time. He didn't settle down until his 40's.

I read that Winona's parents didn't want her to be engaged to Johnny, although they supposedly liked and admired him. I'm guessing it had to do with her being too young at the time.
