Well, many reasons: * December 25 was not Jesus' birthday. It never said so in the Bible and it is more likely based on clues from the Bible that he was born in Spring. * December 25 was used to celebrate Christmas to compete with the other religious celebrations going on at that time such as Saturnalia, Yuletide, etc ... * Christmas is celebrated in many cultures, and many cultures have a version of Santa Claus. When my father was a child in Italy, they had the Befana - the Christmas witch who brought them toys on Christmas day. * Christmas is a combination of religious celebrations. Even though most people use it to represent Jesus' birth, many symbols are from old pagan religions such as the Christmas tree, mistletoe, holly, etc ... And even though these religions appear to be forgotten, many people are rediscovering Paganism and Wicca. They are considered legitimate religions today. * Many non-Christians still celebrate Christmas because it is part of their culture. Christmas trees and decorations are everywhere in North America.
