A lot of people are self-obsessed. At least you have enough sense to call yourself on it and realize that you should be spending time with your family. The first step you can take is just to show up. Be with your family this Christmas. Your mind might be half-away ... just call it back when you see it fleeting somewhere else. Make sure to invest time with your family, after all, unless you end up marrying this guy you're obsessing about, it is only your family you can count on in times of adversity. If anything happens to you, authorities will call your family not this random guy. You wouldn't want them pulling the plug on you because you "pulled the plug" on your relationship with them.

I am certain that you are not the only person, with this problem.
self absorption, is prevalent. It is good that you have become aware of it. Now you can do something about it. Take time out from this guy to spend time with your family this Christmas, go with some gifts for the home, if you have the means to get some, and have Christmas Dinner with them. Think of all the good times you have had, your childhood, and the many good things they have shared and done for you. You can appreciate them just by focusing on them. There is plenty of time for this guy, later,,,,,,,,, he can wait.........

Why can't you take the person you 'love' home to meet your parents and have him try to get along with them so you will not feel so guilty going to see them yourself. Actually, in life, love toward the opposite sex comes and goes, but your family will always BE your family. Talk to your parents you may be surprised at what they have to say about relationships.

There is a long answer but I'd rather give you the short one. You know yourself how to stop being selfish - no one can stop you but you. If you want to be with your family you will ... don't expect people to answer what you already know. If the guy you are "in love" with is asking you not to be with them, dump him. He will rule your life forever if you 'obey' him on his command.
