If world history and current events have taught me anything it is that "religion" is not the answer to anything.

I checked out the link -
politicians would love it because if it didn't work they'd have something else to blame it on.
And they're attempting to invoke Napoleonic law in every aspect of life anyway - just ratchet it up a few more notches to Sharia law! so the repression wouldn't come as a shock - although the cutting off of hands would be commuted to v.v large fines and fixed penalty notices... and who notices women anyway in the political world? Maggie busted so many balls that they're scared to allow one with half a brain anywhere near central and local government (those with less than half a brain are there to represent the minority).
Me? I'm off to a remote hebridean island to start my own religeous order - the leavemealoneandletmegetonwithit cult.

I love binge drinking and promiscuity, but they are not the problem............the politcians are the problem.
Islam would cause more problems than good, look at how they deal with homosexuals and how they treat women for instance. Islam is a barbaric cult that should be left in the dark-ages, it is most certainly not the answer. Personally I'd chose death before Islam.
Along with Politicians, all Religion's are THE problem.

Hey, go for it! Destroy all satanic Teddy Bears! Lash the poor woman who was raped and sentenced to be lashed because she was in car of a man whom she was not related! That's a sample of what you'd have.
Incidentally, the last example happened in Saudi Arabia and the King pardoned her so as to avoid international outrage that a rape victim would be further degraded. Not only she was raped but the male companion in the car with her as well.
Yes, let's give away our freedoms and submit to an all-powerful, all-knowing totalitarian state where it's illegal to change religions. That's how it is in Egypt; one cannot leave Islam for another religion.
Let's turn back time and go back to the Middle Ages and bring back debtor's prison, the rack, iron maiden and burning irons. That's pretty much how it is in the Middle East.
I understand that in Pakistan you have to have a permit to buy alcohol and can only do so legally if you're a non muslim. They say boot-legging is very common in that country.
America tried getting rid of alcohol with prohibition. It didn't stop the drinking but it did raise the murder rates and suicides. Plus, organized crime moved in and made a killing in more ways than one on selling booze.
Why not look at why people binge drink? How about creating jobs for people which doesn't mean working at McDonald's and pay a decent wage? Why not improve housing, education and raise the standard of living?
If anything, go back to traditional values in which Britain was founded. It's God Save the Queen, not Allah Save the Queen.

Islam is a religion, not a social programme, so how would you propose converting people who either follwed no religion, or who were committed to another??
British society has always had elements of anti-social behaviour, you just have to look at 17th century London. There is more yobbishness now yes, but the "yoof" would never go for Islam - I think there is a middle ground to be discovered somewhere!!

Pakistan has one the highest rate of drug addicts in the world.
http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/world/south_asia/806610.stm
Pakistan is a world capital for the sexual exploitation of children
http://gvnet.com/childprostitution/Pakistan.htm
Pakistan has an aids problem much worse than the UK
http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/world/south_asia/6539437.stm
All of these problems are mirrored in the Pakistani population of the UK, Go to any town in the North, Pimps, drug dealers, Massive unemployment, Terrorism. Imams have no idea what is happening in there own communities and all their problems are swept under the carpet. We are not perfect by a long stretch of the imagination but we're hardly going to take advise from Islamic hypocrites.

Absolutely not. It`s the mideast ppl who insists on applying this so-called religion everywhere. It will not solve anything & it`s not suitable for europeans culturwise, you should realise that. & The REAL reason it`s applied in mideast & pakistan & such countries is that those countries would be in total turmoil without it. Because those ppl there have no sense. If ever applied in U.K it will be at the expense of freedom. All freedom would be lost. Do you really want all brits to loose their dignity?

if Islam is the answer, how come islamists are the most socialy backword. the most intolerent, the most violent racist people on the entire planet. its right to stone a woman to death because she is raped? .....go take your 1000 year old bulshit cave dweller garbage and stuff it up your Islamic @rse mate. I'm shure there must be a place for Islam some where.....some where as far from decent civilised people as possible. your religion came from a dogs @rse. not from any god.

It is not the drunken promiscuity of the voters, but the sober corruption of politicians that is the problem.
Moslems actually get intoxicated on different substances.
I don't think Arab traditions of wife stoning and homosexuality are a great improvement on our own vices.
England tried your experiment under Oliver Cromwell, and look what happened after he died! The rule of hypocrites was followed by the rule of open harlots.
I agree with you about our useless bishops.

There is no doubt that Islam does have some of the answers to questions which the people of Britain want answers to. It's not just binge drinking - there's much more to it than that.
I note that after the boy's name 'Jack', that 'Mohamed' is now the second most popular boys name here in UK.
Britain has always suffered from a history of binge drinking. It is by no means a new phenomenon. Anyone can go back to the 18th century and take a look at the art-works of the period to understand just how much of our history is gin-soaked.
Even when the Americans got around to signing up to the Declaration of Independence, they got stoned out of their skulls on booze. There is actually a list of what they got drunk on somewhere.
I have a copy of a letter from a British soldier at the Battle of Waterloo. The letter was written on the eve of the battle to a family member somewhere in Norfolk. The writer explains that all is good and that Gin is one English penny per pint while tobacco is only four English pence per pound.
One gets the impression from the letter that our soldiers at Waterloo were boozed up and smoked half to death and that more probably died from excessive booze than got shot by the French.
I have been doing a rough study of our booze culture here in UK and have found out that during the early Victorian period it was common for vast crowds to gather in Hyde Park here in London of a Summer's afternoon, after church, to get drunk. People brought their booze with them from the pubs or home and drank and drank until they were senseless.
All manner of things have been tried here in UK over the years to cut back on the booze, including the imposition of closing times at the pubs.
Pub times in my youth were quite different to that of today. Back then, [born 1941] in the 1950s and 1960s, the pubs here in London had the following [approx] opening hours : -
Monday to Saturday [lunch time] 11.00am - 3pm
Monday to Saturday [evenings] 5.30 - 11pm
Sunday [lunch] 12-noon to 2pm
Sunday [evenings] 7pm-10.30pm
Even with the above strict pub hours, introduced during WW-One in order that our munitions workers should not be drunk all day, people still got drunk out of their skulls.
Personally my wife and me never take more than ten quid to the pub and we only ever drink Coca-Cola.
We do all of our boozing at home - it's a lot cheaper.
In respect of religion - here in England the official state religion is Anglican - the Church of England. They are not the only religious leaders who have seats in the house of Lords. So too do the Methodists and the Jews and there are several Muslim members of the House of Lords.
The good news, if that's the correct word, is that a pint of beer may go up to four pounds per pint in pubs sometime in 2008. Oh yippee!!
Wishing you all the best for Christmas and the New Year.
