'^' means the xxx power of something.

e.g.
2^6 = 2 x 2 x 2 x 2 x 2 x 2 = 64
(the sixth power of 2)

4^3 = 4 x 4 x 4 = 64
(the third power of 4)

8^2 = 8 x 8 = 64
(the second power of 8)

etc.
