Why is it that people from other countries are always getting on Americans for everything? Not speaking enough languages, acting ignorant, stuck up? I don't get it especially the language thing. I don't understand why people say Americans need to learn more languages, and that Europeans know three to four. OK, they live next to many different countries that speak many different languages America is next to Canada and Mexico, so excuse us dumb Americans for God having us born in this country, and it seems to me that in other countries they speak their language soley. In some countries the only reason they speak another language is because the govt. requires it. Everyone is always talking about how ignorant and judgmental Americans are, but aren't they doing the same thing by judging us? I don't know who died and made every other nation the voice of reason. It is just so hypocritical. Does anyone understand why we (Americans) are just soooooo dumb? Cause I certainly dont.

I do speak another language Spanish and am working on Korean. I just think that people shouldn't lump every SINGLE American into the same category, and racism DOES exist in places out side of America.

I thank everyone for their honest opinions. The only point I was trying to make was that claiming all Americans as ignorant and dumb is stereotyping; which is the same thing that other nations say Americans do. I just think its hypocritical and I would never put a group of people in the same category, its just like putting any group of people in one category and stereotyping them because of what they are born as; which is wrong. Anyways thanks everyone for all the answers.

I don't think people think Americans are any more dumb than any other foreign nation; but the stereotypical American swagger and "we are the best" attitude certainly annoys a lot of other, naturally, patriotic people.
All nationalities have their detractors and critics. Speaking other languages is a great way to learn about other cultures. The sooner we, as a planet, learn to accept each other's differences in attitude and perspective, the sooner we'll be able to live together without threatening to blow each other up.
There are so many fantastic things to come out of America. But let's not forget that there are so many things to come out of the rest of the world too.

They go by the way you act in other countries; many Americans act like the world is America and America is the world. This is arrogant. Most young Americans today have a very low level of understanding of basic history outside their own country, or of other cultures. This does not endear them to the rest of the world.
And yes, "text-language" and poor spelling and grammar on the Net (in spite of spellcheck!) perpetuate this idea.
You say, "I don't know who died and made every other nation the voice of reason" and yet, this is just exactly how many Americans act toward the rest of the world--like they are the ones who know and we should all bow down and worship their superior wisdom. Not least your political leaders.
Personally I speak 3 different languages, English among them. If you try to understand others and communicate on their terms, they will be more understanding of you.

I'm North American as well. I have problems with other Americans because I am ridiculed for dating foreigners ( spanish and german) and because I feel bad for Middle East citizens caught in the middle of unneccessary wars.
Blacks are treated better in European countries than they are in USA. The discrimination in my small hometown is crazy and they are too stupid to realize they are bigots.
Yes, we become involved in international conflicts too quickly by pulling out the big guns without using peaceful resolutions.
Yes, we are the fattest nation in the world because we depend on cars for everything.
If we rode bikes, start walking, and cut back on food portions everyone will be healthier.
Plus, our cost of living is the reason we are underpaid and overworked.
I'm planning on moving outside of USA in a few years. I speak conversational French but need to polish my skills.
USA has it good points too because we host every country in the world and fortunes can be made with the right contacts and industry.

People from other countries believe that Americans are dumb because they see all these brilliant Americans posting things on the internet with bad spelling and grammar. How is a country supposed to look like anything but stupid when people can't even use their native language correctly.

actually american people believe that we are the voice of reason for the rest of the world, that is why we are involved in everything, like afganistan, iraq, cuba, world war 1 and 2, and other conflicts that originally had nothing to do w/ the US but the US made it their business. and there is nothing wrong w/ learning more than one language, the more languages you know the more worldly you become, but most americans only know english, which means that they can't commmunicate w/ a large portion of the world, which i think is a shame. my dad speaks seven languages and he can communicate w/ almost everyone he meets, except for some asians, because he doesn't speak one of those languages. but i think that knowing different languages can only be positive for the person.

There are a number of your countrymen who are ill informed or ignorant (and I don't mean that in a nasty way) of the World outside of NY-LA. A small minority of these people are happy to wallow in this condition and take pot shots at anybody who tries to increase their knowledge or increase their awareness. Unfortunately the rest of you get tarred with the same brush as these "Deliverance" types.
