this question is valid !! the answer is in the range of shot from the barrel to target bird shot is as lethal to humans at 10 feet as buck shot // try this on a sheet of paper at various ranges (BE SAFE DO THIS IN A SAFE PLACE SUCH AS A LONNNGGG FIELD OR IN A FIRING RANGE UNDER THE EYE OF A PROFESIONAL) // use two peices of paper for each range i.e. 10 feet 20feet 30 etc etc // shoot one with bird shot and the other with buck // you will find that both will leave a ragged hole up to a point then will start to spread // use the same gun with the same barrel for each shot // try to find the same weight of shot in each i.e. 1 oz or 1.25 oz for both bird and buck shot// then you will see where your gun will be the best for each shot // if you are using a shot gun for home defence then the use of bird shot is a very good choice as when it hits a wall then most will stay there and not go thru as will buck would (buck being heaver than bird shot for shot, has more mass and will travel much farther than bird and will prob pass thru inner walls) now having said that bird will too if fired directly into a wall at close range (you still have a "slug" of small shot at very close range) if you are "hunting humans" then just go to your local law enforcemen office and tell them your plans they will give you all the time you will ever need to study your plans

buck shot will take down almost anything you shoot at with a 12 gage shotgun. bird shot does a nice job on birds & some types of bird shot is used to shot traps & clay pigons.

bird shot are really tiny pellets most likly not fatal they have a larger spread hints the bird shot because birds fly high and fast so u need a big spread, buck shot is just regular bb's and lethal at close and moderate range 50-60 yards, most lethal would be the solid slug.

At a distance of less than 30 ft. birdshot is just as lethal as buckshot, because the shot pattern remains tight until after that distance.

At point blank range the bird shot is effectively a big slug and makes a horrendous mess. I responded to a possible suicide where the guy put the barrel under his chin while lying on the couch before pulling the trigger with his toe. It blew pieces of him into every room on that floor. So to answer your question....both.

it depends on the range, buck shot is probably more lethal but at point blank, you are more likely to get athrough and through shot with buck shot but at point blank with bird shot it will penetrate and bounce around inside you doing extensive damage tomost every vital organ, at distance bird shot wont do any more than superficial damage, as where buck shot can still be lethal.

Both can be equally lethal, it just depends on the choke you use and the range you are shooting at.

What state has a season for humans?
I don't think either was intended for humans. This is why we hunters get a bad wrap by Gun Control Groups.
