12 'bore' is the same as 12 'gauge', the bore size of a shotgun. It is measured by the number of BALLS (NOT slugs) of a specific diameter to make one pound.
12 gauge= 12 balls to the pound
10 gauge= 10 balls to the pound, or 10 'bore'

With shotguns, the bore, or gage refers to the number of lead balls you could make with one pound of lead. So a 12 gage shotgun has a bore such that a lead ball weighing 1/12 of a pound would fit the barrel.

An exception to this is a four ten (.410) shotgun, which refers to the inside diameter of the barrel as .410 inches.

It is the gauge of the shotgun, for example 12, 16, 20, 28, 410...*

This number is how many slugs it takes on the bore diameter and of equal height to make 1#.

So the bore of a 12ga is .730" so a slug that is .730" in diameter and .730" high will have 12 lead slugs to make 1#. same for all but the 410.

The 410 is the actual bore diameter.

I think it's the size, or gauge, of a shotgun. It means it will put a big hole in the target.
