The reason they fly in the triangular shape is because..... The leader is always infront of the triangle, and the leader always leads them to the destination, so when the leader gets tired, another bird will take over, so its like

The bird in the front cuts a wedge in the air as it flies. The birds that follow glide along the triangular wedge line so that they face least resistance by the air. After some time, some other bird will take the lead (strain too) and fly in the front. This is synergy of flying together.

Probably a function of two things.
1. Birds following the lead would have to work harder due to the turbulence made by the flapping of their wings. They also want a clear line of sight while keeping other birds in their peripheral vision. The easiest shape that conforms to these requirements is the v-shape.
2. It may have something to do with the structure of their brains. newly discovered place cells of the hippocampus seem to fire in a hexagonal grid to locate the animal in relation to its surroundings. That structure would prefer a v shape over a straight line.

It has to do with air drag and streamlining. One bird takes the lead, and the others position themselves so to have the least air resistance, so they naturally form a "V".
If you then wonder why there are more birds on one side than the other, that's just how they divided out.

it helps reduce resistance....for the birds in the back....so they switch positions so they can rest from the lead position. they can then travel a longer distance then if they were flying alone.
