I would stay with the Focus. VW is great but more expensive to run. Ford are one of the least expensive cars to maintain and give lots of good bits for the money.

The VW passat is a good car, its reliable, spacious and a workhorse. The only disadvantage is that parts might be quite expensive, but overall its an excellent car. The Vauxhall Vectra is not so much of a good car, they're not as good as the Passat and their build quality is not exactly top-notch. The Focus is a good car, ive driven it once and the performance and handling is excellent. The other car that I would recommend is a Ford Mondeo. I had this car 6 years and drove it to 161,000 miles and it never let me down. The only problem it had was an oil leak at 120,000 but it was completely bulletproof. I traded it in for a Primera V6 but I miss it so much, i'll buy the new Mondeo 2.0T in 4 years time hopefully. Good Luck!!

Well, you won't get a similarly aged Passat and Vectra for the same money, the Passat will be a good £2k dearer than the Vauxhall. If you like your focus, what about the last of the old-shape Mondeos? They're good spec, cheap (under £10k for an 07 plate) and they're really good cars.
Another point, it's always better to buy the last of the old model rather than the first of the new models, as the manufacturer's had plenty time to sort out any build quality bugs.

First a Passat is nowhere near Ford price range. Focus is 12,000 new and Passat Gl is 23,000 new. A VW Golf base model would be better choice as it will cost 20,000 but worth it over Ford, which 1-2 years old is worth maybe 4,000.00 and generally considered garbage. I am buying a 1999 VW Jetta Vr6 GLX with leather, sunroof, stock cold air induction, short throw manual, and power everything. Did I say fast as hell too. Also 25 MPG based on way they get power for 6500 as this is fair trade in value in KBB. it has 75,000 miles and has been meticulously maintained.

My choice would be the Passat as its way better build comfort is second to none very reliable and economical, mine is the red D I and pulls like a train hard driving will still return 30mpg take it handy on a long run and you will return average 56mpg for a 1,9 you wont beat that, Skoda are much the same car but resale value will not be as good as the VW, it will cost you more to purchase initially but you wont lose out on resale,

Don't laugh at an old motor trade insider. I would definitely also look at the Skoda Octavia, which is exceptional value and relatively cheap to run. Then pick which one you are comfortable with. People just do not seem to realise that once you have weeded out the bad buys personal preference is very important. I have known people agonise over brochures, only for all doubts to disappear after road tests. If you want to compare overall runnung costs in detail, the leasing company figures in the 'What Car' magazine tables provide a reliable comparison.

I would personally go for the passat. You know you are getting the best German engineering and build quality. It's a lovely looking car with a very luxurious cabin.
A friend of mine has the Vauxhall vectra and they still have alot of problems with there electrics and sensors etc.
OR if you have had trouble free motoring and you like the focus, then sometimes its better the devil you know.
