You're not wrong. In America capitalism fuels religion. Not only are the various sects of Christianity competing for souls, they are competing for tithes as well. The church is big business here. You can make it filthy rich for simply reading to a group of people from a book a few hours a week.
Also, our education system here is severely underfunded and is just down right awful, especially in science education. Most students here aren't taught the theory of evolution, or if they are it is very badly taught and just skimmed over.

I am not American but am not really religious either. I believe in God most days as after having so many people in my life die and having to struggle day in and day out I am not sure of my faith. I am a Anglican and my hubby's family are all catholic. But each to their own I guess. Merry Xmas.

American, capitalist, democracy, lovin' Atheist here!
I would say the reason you hear so much from American atheists is that we are surrounded by bible thumping religionists here. We have "In God We Trust" on our money. Then there is our joke of a pledge of allegiance that in one part reads "Under God" which automatically divides the U.S in two - the believers and the nonbelievers, and then the next line reads "Indivisible".
The evangelical Christians are trying desperately to reinstate prayer in school and outlaw abortion.
They have no respect for the first amendment of our constitution.

Freedom of Religion is one of the founding tenets of the American Society. We are allowed to believe what we want, and no one can take it away from us.
America started out as a very religious society, as people fled to this land to avoid religious persecution. It has always been here, and probably always will be.
And yes, I am American and I am religious. I'm Wiccan.

I'm an American and have a religion but I'm not "religious."
Most Americans are Christian (I'm not) and many of them try to shove their beliefs down everyone else's throats (forbidding gay marriage, passing restrictive abortion laws, fighting to leave "In God We Trust" on our currency, etc).
I don't know why that is and it frustrates the crap out of me.

I am American, raised Catholic but have left the church. I don't actively participate in any religion and probably lean towards being an agnostic.

American and Catholic here (moved here from Ireland when I was young though).
Edit: Peremiculturepete's what's wrong with Americans? We've done a lot more for the world than Australia has.

Yes, I am American. I was raised Roman Catholic but left it many years ago. I am currently non-religious, but I am searching for my spiritual corner or niche.
