Seems to be a problem with the most recent firmware update. I don't particualrly want to take it back, but then again I don't want to wait and risk it not being replaced by a 60G model. Anyone any advice?

You can easily restore the ps3 harddrive to the factory new condition by running restore.. You need to run a backup of the system first so you don't loose your game saves etc.... You will also have to redownload your games (for free -playstation network keeps track of downloads).

Before you do that try a dvd lens cleaning disc to clean the lens, and also turn of the information news bar on the right hand corner of your ps3s main menu and see if that helps.

You can't roll back to a previous state. What you can do is:
a). Wait for another update, but Sony never announces release dates for these;
b). Take it to the service.

Well, if it's the firmware you could try to roll it back...
