What are the roads like? How long did it take?

Not in one go but I have driven from Perth to Adelaide and from Adelaide to Alice Springs and Uluru and on to Darwin. The roads are fine. It is bitumen all the way, no dirt roads, and the roads are wide enough not to worry about trucks . Passing and overtaking are not difficult. The important thing about road trains is to make sure the driver knows you are there before you start overtaking.

It is a long way. Plan at least two days and an overnight stop between Perth and Port Augusta and the same between Port Augusta and Alice Springs. Uluru is about three hours from Alice Springs. There are things of interest to see on the way so if you have the time, use it. You won't regret it.

this is not an easy drive and there is virtually nothing to see but good old outback and a few animals.

with flight prices these days it is also probably cheaper to fly there and save yourself 4-5 days driving, unless you are not time pressured and want the driving experience. check out virgin air for good airfares.

for hotels, advise to use a site www.roomfetcher.com which has a huge range at good prices
