I'm looking at hiking in British Columbia at the end of September / early October. I would like to do a few day trips and possibly a 3 day backcountry trip in the rockies or vancouver island. I've done a fair bit of wild camping in Scotland, so have some expertise / kit. Any tips on this?

It is towards the end of the season. Are the trails / huts likely to still be open or shut for winter?
Any recomendations? Top day trails? Good 3 day backcountry trips?
Any public transportation to trail heads, or good ones starting near tourist spots?
Any networks for hooking up with a likeminded fellow for the trip?

Check out the West coast Trail on Vancouver Island. You have to reserve ahead; I'm sure they have a website that will give you more info. Portions of the trail are for experienced only. It will certainly still be open in September/October. For short trails, I have done many in Nanaimo, where I live: Westwood Lake, or around Buttertubs Marsh (more of a stroll than an trail, but still worth doing), you can walk a trail to the top of Mount Benson or Sugarloaf Mountain

Do the Grouse Grind. its near vancouver. Goldenears mountain in Maple Ridge (Greater Vancouver), is also good, and you can camp there as well, plus the view at the top is spectacular, + a stunning waterfall and friendly chipmunks (im actually serious about the chipmunks, haha)
