French fried potatoes also known as "French Fries" were likely invented during the 18th century in the area that later became Belgium. The name "French" was applied to them in English at the beginning of the 19th century.
Whether or not Belgians invented them, "frites" quickly became the national snack and a substantial part of both national dishes - making the Belgians their largest consumers, and to Europe, their "symbolic" creators.

Potatoes that have been cut into thick to thin strips, soaked in cold water, blotted dry, then deep-fried until crisp and golden brown. They are called pommes frites in France and chips in Britain. The name does not come from the fact that their origin is French, but because the potatoes are "frenched" -cut into lenght wise strips. other versions of
french-fried potatoes are shoestring potatoes (matchstick-wide) and steak fries (very thick strips).
French Fries has one meaning: strips of potato fried in deep fat.

Well, shuck my corn, and slap my mule. Are you talking about fast food, or one of those out of the way pubs that have the machine to cut a potato, peel and all, and turn it into a fine plate of fries? Drive through, I would have to say Arby's has a fair home style fries.

If you are lucky enough to live in SoCal, Ariz, or Nev and you like a french fry that is a little bit different, In-N-Out is good (it's kind of an acquired taste--they are fresh, not frozen, they have the skin on them, and they're cooked in 100% vegetable oil).
