I was in bed but not asleep or even close to sleep, and heard something metallic clunking/rolling down the stairs. There was nothing there. Then I noticed that the light was on upstairs, so I got up to go turn it off and just as I did so, it went off by itself! I was a bit freaked out by this stage and decided that I must somehow be having some sort of waking dream. Anyway, went and lay down in bed again and just as I put my head on the pillow, there was a huge flash of blue/white light right by my head together with a kind of buzzing noise - it only lasted for a split second. After that, everything was quiet and nothing else happened. I should point out that everyone was asleep at the time, and that nothing even remotely like this has ever happened to me before or since. Any ideas?

We don't have a cat, or a dog come to think of it! I think it probably was a waking dream ... but very weird all the same! It was pretty scary.

You said it yourself: Nothing like that had ever happened before. What is more likely, that things were going bump in the night or that you were asleep?

The blue white light with buzzing accompanying it sounds very much like a discharge of static electricity.

Something clunking down the stairs sounds a lot like a cat may have been involved.

It's called sleep paralysis. It's a dream state that happens when you're actually mentally awake. You didn't go into the other room. In fact, you never left your bed.

It has happened to me many times. Weird huh.

I think your explanation is the right one -- a waking dream. Like the vast majority of paranormal experiences reported on Yahoo Answers, yours occurred in association with sleep or trying to sleep.

Have you ever dreamen't that you were dreaming.

In ohter words have you dreamed and woke up but you were only dreaming that you woke up.

These types of dreams can get anything doing anything....and sounds like this is what you had.

My husband has these kind a lot.

You were either vivid dreaming or the family ghost decided to make itself known to you. Or perhaps you were having a Christmas Carol type dream. Your name isn't Jacob Marley or Ebenezer Scrooge is it.

Well obviously somebody wanted to make their precense known to you, so try speaking to them. I've had a similar experince, and some ghosts just want someone to talk to.
