He actually doesnt torture people. That is a false teachings that simply scare people into following religious leaders.
If God were to just kill sinners, it would not prove that God is right, it would merely prove that he can kill people. By allowing sinners to live God is giving them an opportunity to prove who is right, him or those who choose to follow what they want.

Good idea! But the believers would not have so much left to scare people. Not very convenient for their shop.
For people interested:
The eternal punishment is part of the official doctrine of the RCc (meaning if you want to call yourself a catholic, you MUST believe this). Every attempt to change this item,e.g. the idea that god one day would forgive everybody) was severely condemned. Several Councils have taken a strong point on this.
