I taught myself Italian. What I did was that I got the follow audio books/software:

1) Michel Thomas: Italian. Beginners, Language Builder and Advanced.
2) Rosetta Stone: Italian. Levels 1 and 2. I hear 3 is out.
3) Pimsleur's Italian. Level 1, 2 and 3.

I hear that people that use "Tell Me More Italiano" benefit greatly.

Anyway, after using the 3 that I told you, I knew enough to start watching tv shows. I often just go to Rai.tv and watched the entire series of a show called "7 vite" and I watched some summer soap opera called "Un posto al sole." I then spent most of my time watching the 24 hour RAI news channel and a show called "Che tempo che fa." If you're into Italian politics, you may way to watch "Confronti."

If you need any more help or details, e-mail me.

Go to Books a Million. They have self learning CD's on Italian, Spanish and French.
You can get ones which are audio only so you can listen in your car while you drive. or out working in yard or doing whatever. Or get ones which require computer and are both audio and visual.
You can get from the basic to advanced courses just depends on what you want to spend.
Think Walton and Dalton books also have them.
