A cat's heat is also called a 'season' because it occurs seasonally - from about march through to october, when the days are longer. The come in to heat every 2-3 weeks during this time until they become pregnant - or better yet, until they're spayed!!

That cats are popular right now to have? I thought they'd always been a popular pet to own.
If you mean in season as in "in heat/estrus" that means they are fertile at the time and can breed.

In the first few months Jan-Mar, they are unresponsive. Then April-Aug they flourish and open up, but by Sept., they start falling from the trees and you can use them as compost.
