I play my dvds on my xbox 360 and I have a brand new plasma tv. Why am I not able to view a dvd in hd?

To get true HD, you need to purchase the HD-DVD upgrade add-on which is about $180 retail. Without that upgrade, your Xbox operates as an upconvert DVD player. As an upconvert, it does two things for you. 1. It makes your DVD look a little bit better (and do say a little bit). And 2. It formats all of your DVD's to your widescreen HDTV.

So bottom line - You need to buy the HD-DVD add-on in order to watch HD-DVD's in true High Definition.

One more thing: If your Xbox was purchased within the past 3-4 months, then you want to make sure that you are running HDMI cables. This will improve your picture greatly. If your xbox is older, then your unfortunately out of luck and have to run component cables.

because your xbox 360 is not a native high definition DVD player-the ps3 is (using the blu-ray format). you will need the add-on (and presumably the HDMI cable if you don't have one). for the xbox to display high def material.
