For me, it's that it gets so old so quick. I mean, I'll hear people on their mp3's during break or study hall sharing an earbud with a friend when their buddy says, "This is such an old song. This came out in, what, October?"

Of course, back in October, it was the biggest hit ever, everyone loved it, and it was everyone's favorite song.

What's the staying power in that? Why is music so disposable now?

Ergg... your opinions?

Consumerism.

These songs are not made to stay, people nowadays need something quick, something fast.

Almost every current pop song sounds the same as all the others. And the people listening to them just don't care, because that is all they know of music.
Except for a couple of bands out there, there is no originality or creativity in the music world anymore.

Teenagers today consider anything made before 2000 to be 'old', and if you dare to mention music from the 50's - 1995 to them, that's 'ancient', or 'old people's music'.

Music is disposable because it is all about making money for the managers and producers, about every talentless nobody getting their 15 minutes of fame in a world were 'celebrity' rules.
The people buying this music have no experience of the many talented bands and artists who created their own songs, and are still famous 20 - 30 - 40 years on.

Pop music is fueled by an industry that needs to constantly sell a product, whether or not artists who make it are ready to release it. So the artistic quality is compromised for steady production and the sounds of each song end up blending together in order to shovel into the market more music without stretching or challenging present tastes. The degree to which music is different from the norm risks being disliked compared to what is already liked. So record companies go with sure hits instead of artistic integrity. Nothing really new or interesting is liked at first and the music industry wants anything that is liked "at first." It doesn't matter what you think three months after you've bought the album.

if its so popular, why didn't I hear about the "Umbrella" song?

Music, unfortunately, has become a commodity. Everybody has it, and everybody wants it. And if it doesn't have a certain mass appeal, it gets ignored.

What is truly sad, is that the Internet has spawned a generation of phenomenal indy musicians that will never get heard. The "music factories" keep pumping it out. And about half, I can't stand. There's a distinct lack of artistry in that music. The heart and soul of music doesn't rest with the labels any more.... its with the indies.

I'm an indie. And, frankly, I'm damn proud of that.

The short shelf life is nothing new, but it does still irk me.

I think the thing that bugs me the most is not really coming from the *performers* side, but from the *consumers*.

Seems the masses just EAT UP all this lousy 'product' passing for "music" & they just don't see what garbage it is. I mean, really- Avril, Ashlee Simpson & HS MUSICAL??

& That's the stuff that sell$ millions.

Makes me wanna line every fan of that stuff up against a wall & drive a smack mobile down each one's face.

Wake up, people!

What aggravates you the most about popular music?

How Musicianship is looked at now as how well you can dick around with artificial means of creating music rather than actual talent

Most music on pop stations is manufactured to make money. That's my problem with it. I like music that was created for the sake of the art.

Same thing! It's on the radio ALL the time, and a good song becomes annoying very quickly.
