No. But the instructors (RDCs, DIs, etc., etc.) can have you open your mail in front of them to make sure there is no contraband (such as cigarettes - I've seen it) in the mail.

When I was in boot camp no one read our outgoing mail, but anyone who received "thick" mail (i.e. envelope with pictures in it) usually had their mail opened in front of everybody by the Instructor. Tell your family not to send a box or food...that is definatly asking for trouble!

In Air Force boot camp they look for pictures but that's it unless they find it out or when going through your locker. Your TI will joke about banging your girlfriend or wife when she comes to your graduation.
I don't reccomend anyone go in right now. It's awful what they do in there. You come out sick as a dog and less human.
If we all quit signing up they'll start correcting the horrible process. Then they'll call for a draft and the public will revolt. Then we can throw the crooks out and end these false wars.

NO it is against the law to open mail its actually a felony.. they do however make you open any boxes you get in front of them to make sure you dont have anything you are not suppose to... and of course you push for each letter you get.

Now, when my nephew was in basic training in Parris Island (USMC) some of us sent him energy drinks and protein bars and beef jerky. I don't know if the boxes were already opened when my nephew got it.
