Okay. My brother, who's a big fan of shopping online over coffee shop wifi, just had his credit card number stolen and used. Apparently, the guy used it to do a lot of shopping online and through catalogues. Here's what I don't get: how is this not the stupidest crime ever? Couldn't the credit card company just track down the addresses stuff was shipped to and have the guy arrested? Or do these people have some way to make sure that doesn't happen? It just seems like a really, really stupid thing to do--not to mention dang inconsiderate of my darling bro.

Obviously credit cards used online are at risk. My question was actually how the people who use these numbers don't get caught.

Credit card number given online will likely be used by others due to exposure of records.

I have seen this happen before. The card number(s) are sold to someone else or used to pay that persons bills. A friend of mine found their debit card had been used to pay for car insurance premiums for 3 different people in 3 States. Luckily, the bank took over, replaced the money in his account and did the legal actions.
