You were pretty spot on the first time. The .45-70 is an excellent cartridge for deer. If you like the .30/30 lever action rifles, the .45-70 seems like an appropriate evolution to a larger round in a rifle with similar handling and controls.

Bigger isn't what you're really looking for, just something with a flatter trajectory and good terminal ballistics. As a matter of fact, 30 caliber is really on the large end of things for deer cartridges. If you want to stay with leveractions, you should check out the new Marlin 30 caliber and rifle. If you want a bolt action, there are quite a few calibers from 6.5 (6.5x55 Swedish Mauser and 260 Remington, for example) to 270 Winchester and the various 7mm cartridges like 7mm08, 7x57 Mauser, and 280 Remington. And of course there's no law against using the larger calibers, even if you aren't after larger game, so there's nothing at all wrong with 308 Winchester, 30-06, 8x57 Mauser, 338-06, etc. And you'll note I haven't even mentioned anything that has "magnum" in the name!

The 30-30 has harvested more Deer than any other caliber rifle.* The majority of Deer are shot at 100 yards or less.* The 30-06 is a better choice when getting another caliber rifle, because you have a greater variety of bullet weights to choose from depending on what you are Hunting.* It will harvest any game in North America cleanly.* When you have a 30-06 you don't need any other rifle.* I prefer to use 180 or 220 grain bullets for big game.*

Keep the 30-30. Buy some Leverevelution ammo from Hornady and extend your range by at least 100 yards. If that doesn't work. Buy a good 30/06 or 7MM Magnum from Remington and shoot it until you need a walker to get around....hopefully at least 90 years old for you. Then, give the rifle to a young person to carry on the hunting legacy.

.270, .303, .30-06, .308
I agree with DCA20033....
And I agree with what WWD is saying. .20 calibre rifles the .The .223 or .243 are great, but you need a good clean shot (no twigs).

My two favourite calibres for hunting deer
1) .243 Win - 100 grain
2) 30/30 - 160 grain

My preference is a remington .270 with150 grain shells. This rifle is a good flat shooting rifle that does not have a lot of recoil.

After reading several of the questions that you have asked, i have came to the conclusion, that what you need for hunting, is an airsoft or a BB gun.
that way, you couldn't hurt yourself or anyone else
