religion is the group you belong to, or cult as it is called. If your asking about faith and belief in God that is totaly different.

you have a religion its atheist, not one i would choose, but still a following.

I have only one question to ask you, and it is this:

if I beleive and I am right and you are wrong you will forever know it, but if I believe and I am wrong I won't know it and neither will you.
so which is better? if you have some proof for what you believe then you have to accept that i guess, however yes bibles have alot of contradictions, because there are so many written from so many different religions however you have to accept faith as what it is, faith is believing with out seeing. With out total understanding.
If God wanted us to know all what would be the need for faith at all? it would be just like your history a matter of fact. The bible clearly states he wants each of us to come to him on our own, however if it was a matter of fact well it would be easy to just do that.
That is not the definition of FAITH, you need to some times just accept the facts that all is not known to us, and thats ok.

But i guess the most important thing i can leave you with is this, you have everything to loose by not believing and you loose nothing if it was wrong.
I am a catholic, as history is your religion you should know then it is the first church left to peter by jesus. All other churches or religions came after and were influence by man. The scriptures were changed to suit needs in each. Thus the confusion between religions. I say go back to the beginning and really study with someone who knows what they are talking about, the bible is grr..... because first you must understand when and by whom each book was written, you should know as a history buff that language changes over time, and the words take on different meanings as it is translated. you have to learn history of the biblical times before you can dismiss it, and then decide for your self.

i wish you peace in your quest to find your answer, as for me i have found mine and am happy with that, I have reasons every day to support what i believe. I will never doubt my faith, thats not to say my religion is the same. As man may change the catholic church and they have over the years, no one can change my faith.

Science describes the sector as noticeable. It demonstrates the principles of the average international by way of test and statement. Religion describes the unseen international. It describes a perception in anything greater than we will be able to see and contact. You could have knowledge, love, morality or even spirituality with no need faith. I recognize you may also uncover it a complex thought, however it is actual. To reply your final query ... Yes. Atheists must be on a discussion board discussing faith and spirituality. Atheism is a further outlook on devout questions. What well is it debating and asking questions in case you omit part the argument?

Originally religion was a way to cope with the unknown and to form a rudimentary sense of social order. I'd think that while a "chief" provided leadership and planning, the "priest" provided continuity of knowledge and moral/social guidelines.

The purpose of religion is to give people hopes for life after death. And help with understanding (maybe not so much understanding).

crashrescue2 ... let's assume there is a god and you believe in the wrong one. Then who will be punished forever? :)

Religion is a convenient way to explain things and is also used to bury your head in the sand when times get tough.
