So, why can't you wait until you're 18?
I mean, she's still going to be your sister, and you'll still "have each others backs".

It's going to feel like someone scraping your skin with a needle (which technically it is.) Some parts you might not even feel, but for the most you will. It's a tatoo. You can't be ready for it without being ready for the pain. Especially since your shoulder blade has a lot of places where the needle will be scraping over bone which hurts the most. If you think there is a chance you would not finish it until the end dont get it yet! It sounds like you're probably under 18 since you need your parents permission, so why don't you wait a couple months or years? That way:
a) you will know for sure you want it (getting someone's name, no matter who, is risky!)
b) you will want it so bad you don't care about the pain and you have mentally prepared yourself

The pain is rough, but the constant pressure of the needles numbs you to the pain pretty quickly. The worst part of any tattoo is the black ink that they use the outline the image. Because they have to go over the same part over and over again, it stings pretty badly. But any color, or fill-in area is much better. Since you're getting yours on your shoulder blade it may hurt a bit more in the places where you don't have as much fat. The skinnier places (ankle, small of back) have a lot more nerves than the fattier places (arm, leg or stomach).
If you have a good tattoo artist - which is hard to find, but extremely worthwhile - they should be able to keep you distracted and happy(ish) through the ordeal. Depending on how large a tattoo you're getting, it may need to be spread out over two or three sessions. Mine are all relatively small so I was able to get them in one day. A typical one-day session can be anywhere from two to five hours. But like I said, once you get used to the pressure of the needles and the stinging pain, it's not that bad at all. Sitting in the same position for five hours however can be excruciating. :-)
Good luck with your tattoo. Happy holidays!

First of all, I would say wait until you are over 18. Then you dont need your parents permission, and it's just easier that way. If you are gonna have to wait for your sister anyway, what's the point of getting one now. With that being said, getting a tattoo does hurt but it depends on how big your tattoo is. Make sure the tattoo artist is using a clean needle and that the tattooing station is sanitary.

i have two tattoo's and yes they hurt..but for me it wasn't any different then burning my hand on a stove or the like..maybe if you really want the tattoo, go smaller and simpler styled..less pain and quicker..always though check to make sure they are removing a fresh needle from a new package before they use it on you...theres a french grandmere i know who made me swear to do this before getting any tattoo's..so im passing on her wise advice...seriously papercuts have caused me more pain then the tattoo's ever did..good luck and how cool that you and your sis are gonna get matching tattoos!
ok just read the comments above after i posted this...some of it is plain foolish..i work at a high end clothing store for older women and so on..my wrist tattoo is very visible and i get compliements on it nearly every shift there...and it's your money..if this is a goal or an idea you and your sister have...or have had for a while...i doubt that pretty soon after you get your tattoo or its time for hers you're going to regret it...and how is it going to look like crap when you're older? isnt it going to be a reminder of something you and your sister decided to do when you both were younger?
Jesus ppl! why scare her? if you're against it..give notions you can solidly back up instead of the fear tactics! yes its permament..so think over this carefully..but either then the pain factor i dont see how getting a tattoo on your back (covered for future employers) is a foolish notion or the like! good luck again and ill stop the rant..i was just slightly amazed by the rubbish!

While it may seem "cool" now remember this is 4-ever! Trying to get it removed hurts more that actually getting it - and I have seen grown men cry while they are getting one. You will have to cover it up to get a good job when you are working later. I have a bunch of friends that got one at 18 or 19 and then at 22 wish they had never done it. Mainly because after they got their degree they figured out that employers don't look at them favorably. A lot of big companies have a no tattoo and no facial piercing policy. It may not seem like a big deal now but do you really want to be a bride walking down the aisle in a beautiful gown with your sister's name on your back? Probably not. Get matching necklaces and have your names engraved on them or something else but don't permanently mark your body with something that you may regret later.

it isn't as bad as it's made out to be... of course it hurts but if it's something you want bad enough you'll sacrifice for it... mine took about an hour and a half or so to do, I don't think doing a name will take too long, you should be able to handle it if not, don't do it
I'm not sure what g g is talking about... my husband and I got tattoos together and neither of ours bled... you do need to take care of it though and apply lotion and follow the directions they give you... don't let people try to scare you with lies... good point about having it on the shoulder blade, think about how it will look in a formal dress... I want another one and am having a hard time deciding where I want it... my first on is on my upper right thigh...

lol dont worry about it. its a reletivly small piece if its just a name.
the first little while of getting the tattoo hurts just a little bit but not really much.
then after u get used to it after a few minutes then it is really mellow
then after a few hours it gets really intense as u get kinda worked up and the fatige starts to kick in.
but u will be finished with a tattoo like urs withing stage 2 so u wont have to bear thro the restless pain of stage 3.

Childrens names on the left back shoulder blade area, Melanie on the right back shoulder blade. Old English lettering is a nice style surrounded (with room for addition on the left) with old English ivy and or any other vegetation that appeals to you. The Tatt people will draw something up special just with this rudimentary idea to start with, a good tatt parlor is usually pretty creative with just an idea of what you want.

I heard it feels like a cat constantly scratching at you. I would not advise it until later. What if you and your sister are not on good terms when she turns of age? You will regret getting the tattoo in that case, but it is kinda cute too

It does hurt a lot, but you get used to it. The one thing you can't do, however, is quit halfway - there's nothing sillier than a half-done tattoo.
The tattoo artist has seen this sort of thing before and will help talk you through it if you get nervous, and will take a break if you need it. Go for it!
