My friends are saying I should get a dog but I am out of the house 6am-6pm. Do you think an older dog would be OK? Any suggestions? Would a cat be better? Would love to get a pet but just don't know if it would be practical or fair. And I'm not into fish or snakes or other "stuff" Thanks

I'm glad you are asking this because many people get dogs and don't realize how much attention/exercise they need.

Since you are gone from 6am to 6pm then it'd really be best if you got a cat. A puppy would definitely not be good for you since they require lots of attention and must be trained which takes plenty of time. An older dog may be possible, but a dog really shouldn't be forced to hold it for that long.
I would really go for a cat since you are gone so long each day.

Even tie.
A cat actually requires a lot of attention. The only upside is that they can use the cat box and don't have to be let out. I just got a puppy and I am gone for 14.5 hours a day. I do have someone come over to let him out and to spend time with him. And then he is running around for hours after I come home. Mostly chasing the cat.
Whatever you decide to do, you may want to think about taking a week of vacation so you can spend time with your new friend.

I think a cat would be a much better fit for you than a dog. Dogs need more attention than 6 to 6 would give it. Go with your instincts :)

You can get a cat, but it'll still be lonely. If you pick I suggest you get 2 dogs, or 2 cats so they can keep eachother company!

I think a cat would be better in your situation. They don't require nearly as much attention as a dog would.
