It's a superb round capable of taking any game in the U.S., and most game not in the U.S., and the lighter loads are excellent to knock a deer over with. With a good rifle, accurate shots to 300 yards are possible, but being able to shoot tight groups past 100 isn't usually important in a deer rifle, as most deer are taken within 75 yards.

With a modern rifle, such as the Marlin 1895, higher pressure loads are possible, making the rifle that much more effective. With loads like this I wouldn't doubt that elephant hunting would be within reason. Some of the older high power loads, which wouldn't have matched up to the ones available from Buffalo Bore, were said to be able to push the .458 lead bullet lengthwise through bison.

yes it has been taking deer for over 100 years and still getting the job done
as far as anyone with the it's a 45 caliber and that is too big what about 45, 50, and 54 cal muzzle loaders the 45/70 was a black powder cartridge first and can still; be loaded to replicate black powder ballistics.

It wouldn't be good, it would be great.

If you use the lightweigh bullets from Garrett Cartridge Company, or Buffalo Bore, you should have no problems with a 200-250 yard shot.

If you use the standard loadings from Remington, Winchester, et al, 150 yard shots would be more the norm.

The .45-70 has been making meat for 134 years and still going strong!

Yes, that is the weapon I use when hunting in the brush
At 100 yards it is as accurate as can be

Between 100 and 200 yards, there is a bit of a trail off.. but as long as you know what the drop is... out to 200 yards it is effective

It is a fairly good deer round, although I prefer something a little smaller. I can't guarantee none of your friends will poke fun at you for using it though, it is a .45 after all.

PS It is not that it has to be overpowered, it is just a .45 is normally a ridiculously big deer calibre, and some people can be jerks about gun size. I know a guy who gives me guff about using a .303 for deer, it is huge in his mind for some reason.

For under 200/300 yards? yes, fairly popular here in Wisconsin woods. Marlin 95 rifles, ruger no 1s, NEF single shots.

By deer, I assume you're talking about white tail or some similarly sized animal. If that's the case, absolutely. I'd keep my shots under 150yrds if I were you, but other than that, absolutely.

yes, and if you really want to have some fun, get a .45-70 revolver, and dare your smack-talkin' hunting buddies to shoot it with one hand.

It's a bit of overkill, seeing as it's often used as a buffalo gun, but it would definitely get the job done.
