Actually they were astrologers, and this was a respected school of learning back then.

The three wise men were actually three Zoroastrian priests from Persia. Zoroaster had predicted the birth. If you study this religion some, you will see the influence in the New Testament and gain understanding why it is so different than the Old Testament. Zoroaster lived about 6th Century BCE. The holy book is the Avesta. God is called Ahura Mazda which translates "All Knowing One" Besides Judiasm, Christianity and Islam, it is generally accepted that the Ahura Mazda is also the God common to the other three as the Creator God without peers or any lesser gods.

We know that these men were from the East. (That means East of Bethlehem.) The Bible does not say there were three men, just that there were three gifts: Frankencense, Gold and Myrh. (Most theologians point out that the gifts were symbolic. Frankencense was symbolic of the sacrifices offered at the Temple for the remission of sins. Jesus came to be our sin offering and sacrifice. Gold was symbolic of the fact that Jesus, as God's Son, already owned all the wealth of this world. Myrh was used to embalm bodies and was symbolic of Jesus' death on the cross and need for burial, prior to His Ressurection.)
Although they were wise, in that they sought Jesus before anyone else on Earth, they were also very learned men. At least one was an astronomer. He was aware that the star that came to rest over Bethlehem was new and unusual. Since it would have taken some time to travel from "afar", he must have known about this star for some months prior to Jesus birth in Judea.
Also, at least one of these men This is obvious because of the wealth these gifts would have required. Fools usually do not amass great amounts of wealth. Any man who could afford the time away from his business interests and family for the amount of time this journey (which for all they knew could be a wild goose chase) would require, was very wealthy, even by today's standards.

What made the wise men wise was that they were allegedly priests (which automatically means they were educated and proficient in both written and oral communication) that were proficient in astrology. Note the importance of the star being so intense that they followed it for over two years. Did they know something? Did they see something in the stars?

They knew enough to recognize an amazing sign take that first step on their spiritual journey, and to keep seeking until they found the Savior.
They were learned scholars - some translations use that word instead of wise men.
We actually don't know that there were three though, that is just a tradition based upon the list of 3 gifts they brought.

They were wise men because they knew the significant of the star, and the coming of the Messiah.

Tradition has their names as:
Balthasar, Melchior and Gaspar -- they were wise men most likely from Persia. They were wise because they were humble enough in their wisdom to follow the Wise one via the Hebrew Scriptures, the stars(which were created by God) and the dream sent by God.

They were the only ones in the entire world that noticed the star. Strange though I would have thought that most of the civilizations of the time would have noticed it and at least mentioned it in some sort of writing, but even the wise men failed to do that.

what makes you think they were wise? If you read the account in the bible it says that there were Magi that came from the east. It doesn't say they were wise or how many. A Magi was a magic practicing priest.
