I am currently going through a background check for a police department. What do you do if they ask you about something but you honestly dont remember doing it....Im talking about something small not something major like smoking dope, of course you will remember that. And it was probably something that happened many many years ago. Im 31 but if it was something that happened back when you were 15 or 16.

Just answer honestly. If you make up an answer and screw it up when they ask you again, then what? Just be honest. That is hat they are looking for anyway.

Just say you honestly don't remember that incident, its been over a decade, and your memory fails you at that moment. U didn't mention what state you're in, but here in California, when people are trying to get into law enforcement, but can't meet their tough standards; then one option is to start with the CA Dept of Corrections as a prison guard. The training standards for a prison guard in CA meets POST requirements (Police Officers Standards of Training), and most of the prison guards will start with this career, wait 2 or 3 years to go by, then submit a resume with any city police department. If you don't pass your interview, find out if your state's prison guards receive training that meets POST requirements, and you could use this option as a stepping stone into a police department.

Are you talking about a polygraph or just someone asking you these questions? I just went through that, and if you don't remember, you don't remember, they just want you to answer things the best that you can. I wouldn't stress over it. And by the way, they don't much care about what you did in your teens, no matter what it was, they take that into affect that you were young. Good luck!

Anything that you have done in your teenage years can not be held against you. Even if you were a juvenile delinquent with a record they should be sealed and you are not required to devulge that....the only exception may be gang membership which is documented by the police for particularly vicious gangs. Otherwise relax.

If something is uncovered, they will approach you with why it was ommited....and give you chance to explain why it wasn't significant....

By the way, all cops are crooked......as the expression goes....to find a crooked police officer, all you need to do is call the police station ...don't matter who pick up da' phone!

So don't feel bad if it was a lie....they're used to it and probably see that as a good quality in you.

Lying on your application, failing the polygraph test, bad reports from previous employers, bad credit history, leaving out information, and I am sure there are many other reasons. These are just some of the ones that I have seen fail someone.

Be honest. Making something up or being deceitful is the quickest way to get booted from a hiring process.

Run a LifeScan on yourself. You may be surprised to find that you have a clean record!
