The boxed mixes you find in the grocery stores are very good. Make sure that you buy a name brand one and look for the "best by" date, and get the one that's furthest away. Some mixes just require a couple of eggs and some water. Just follow the instructions (you might have to use the high-altitude over 5000 feet in elevation) and you'll get a very tasty cake. If you want to try baking one from "scratch" try the food network.
Don't forget to grease and flour the pan (non-stick included).

Or if you really want to cheat, you can go to the bakery of your local store and ask for an unfrosted cake (be prepared for the strange looks), and get some frosting and frost it yourself - wahlah - a cake that you "made" yourself.

since you never made a cake. Start off using a box cake mix
include a box of instant pudding vanilla for a yellow cake, follow directions, but instead of using vegetable oil use applesauce. For your icing make a simple cream cheese icing
ICING
1/2 stick of margarine
1(8oz) cream cheese
1 box powdered sugar
1 tsp vanilla
beat well
If you feel you can handle it make this cake
HUMMINGBIRD CAKE
3 cups of flour
1 tsp baking soda
1/2 tsp salt
2 cups of sugar
1 tsp ground Cinnamon
3 lg eggs beaten
3/4 cup veg oil
1&1/2 tsp vanilla
1 (8oz) can crushed pineapples undrained
1 cup chopped pecans
1 & 3/4 cups mashed bananas
Combine flour soda salt sugar and cinnamon in a large bowl, add eggs, oil and vanilla, stirring until dry ingredients are moistened. Do not beat Stir in pineapples and bananas & pecans. Pour batter into 3 greased and floured 9 inch pans. Bake at 350 for 23-25 min or when toothpick comes out clean Cool then spread cream cheese icing add 1/2 cup chopped nuts and sprinkle on layers and top of cake.
Bon Appetit !!

It sounds like you have never made a cake-- so if I were you, I would start with some cake mix-- but create a good one so that is totally looks home made, and not out of a box-
INGREDIENTS
1 (19.8 ounce) package brownie mix
2 (3.9 ounce) packages instant chocolate pudding mix
1 (16 ounce) package frozen whipped topping, thawed
3 (1.4 ounce) bars chocolate covered English toffee

DIRECTIONS
Prepare brownies according to package directions. Let cool.
Mix pudding according to package directions.
In a glass punch bowl, layer in the following order: 1/2 of the brownie, crumbled; 1/2 of the pudding; 1 toffee bar, crushed; 1/2 of the whipped topping.
Repeat layers in the same order. Save the last toffee bar to crumble and sprinkle on top before serving.
Refrigerate. Best if made the day before you serve it.

Go to www.foodnetwork.com and you can search for any cake recipe your in the mood for and you can also search by your favorite food network chef. I would try something by Paula Deen or Emeril Lagasse.

Here are a couple of very easy cake recipes to try. They're basic recipes and from there you will learn to improvise.

Tea Cake Recipe

1 cup butter, at room temperature, plus more for pan
1 2/3 cups sugar
5 eggs
2 cups cake flour
1 tsp. lemon juice
1/2 tsp. grated lemon zest

To prepare oven, pan: Preheat oven to 300°F. Butter loaf pan. Dust with flour.

To make cake:
In medium bowl, beat butter until creamy. Gradually beat in sugar and cream until mixture is light. Add eggs, beating thoroughly after each addition. Continue beating until batter is very light. Fold in cake flour, lemon juice and lemon zest.

To bake cake:
Scrape batter into loaf pan. Bake for 1 1/2 hours, or until toothpick inserted in center comes out clean. Let cool in pan before turning it out onto rack.

To serve: Sprinkle top with confectioners' sugar. Slice.

Cocoa Layer Cake
This easy chocolate cake is made with cocoa - mixed in one bowl.
2 cups sifted cake flour
1 1/2 cups sugar
1/2 teaspoon baking soda
2 teaspoons baking powder
1/4 teaspoon salt
2/3 cup unsweetened cocoa
2/3 cup shortening
2 eggs
1 teaspoon vanilla
2/3 cup milk
1/2 cup warm water

Have all ingredients at room temperature before starting. Grease and flour two 9-inch layer cake pans.

Sift flour then measure. Into a large mixing bowl, sift together the flour, sugar, soda, baking powder, salt, and cocoa. Add shortening, eggs, vanilla, milk, and water; beat on low speed for 3 minutes. Pour batter into prepared pans.

Bake in preheated 350° oven for 30 to 35 minutes, or until a wooden pick or cake tester inserted in center comes out clean. Let cool in pans on a rack for 15 minutes; remove and place layers directly on racks to cool completely.
