First of all, you have to find out the limits of "medical" coverage he had on his insurance (during the time the accident occurred). If for example, his limits were up to $2,000 per person and your medical bill was $3,000 then you have to pay the difference ($1000). If you were working and you have medical coverage thru your employer, you should find out if your coverage with your employer will pick up the difference. Also, the hospital should have at least notified you to let you know that there is a balance due. The hospital should have given you a chance to pay the balance even before a collection agency was involved. Most of the time, a collection agency is involved only after so many notices sent to you by the hospital were ignored. As for finding out what was paid by Geico, you have to look for the claim number assigned to the claim when the accident happened. You can call Geico's claims office, give them the claim number and proceed from there. If you don't have the claim number, look for the policy number. If you do not have either one, you can always call the customer service department and start from there. It will take patience on BOTH sides to resolve this problem. If they give you the run around, tell them that you'll report them to the Department of Insurance in your state.

A claim can be reopened when information that wasn't known by you comes into play. As far as 2 of your medical bills being in collection, you can call the collection agencies and explain to them your bills are the result of a car accident to be paid by the insurance company. Tell them to send the bills back to the creditor. You get your copy of the bills and present them to the insurance company and ask them why they were not paid. If they are related to your accident, then the medical coverage on the insurance policy is supposed to take care of them.

You call the adjuster who handled the claim. Liability coverage may not apply. In many states - when you hit a deer, the injured passenger is entitled to Medical Payment Coverage (med pay) if that is on the car. The adjuster who is handling the claim can explain how it works in your state.

The repair work done is to restore your car to its original condition (pre-accident state). You are entitled to the lost of car use - either a replacement car or a fixed amount per day

You need to start with the guy who's number you were given. It is not unusual or uncommon for claims to be reopened for reasons like this.
