I once heard of a legend saying that the Christmas tree represents the apple tree in the Garden of Eden, from which Adam and Eve ate the forbidden fruit. As such, the Christmas tree was traditionally decorated with red globes, reminding of apples.

The Christmas tree has evolved over the years to be more of a decorative feature at Christmas. Originally, small gifts were attached to its branches. The gifts were to remind us the the gifts given to the Christ Child at His birth. Originally, live candles were allowed to burn, under close supervision, to remind us of the star of Bethlehem. When electric lights became available, they replaced the more dangerous candles . The lights represent the lives of those who follow Christ and the ornaments reflect the lights, giving accelerated meaning to their glow. Most Christians place an angel or a star at the top of the tree to commemorate the star of Bethlehem.
