im signed up for the disney marathon in jan. 2007. I used to be a college athlete running track and cross country however i have not run in about 3 years. i have recently been doing some 20 minute runs but have only 3 more weeks until the marathon. my goal is just to finish obviously walking most of-if not all the way. i figure it shouldnt be too bad since i am used to running. however, i know there might be a possibility of getting injured because of the distance and my lack of training. i just want to know how likely it would be that i get injured given my background. i really just wanted to participate for fun not to compete. thanks for your opinions.

If you don't keep up with a certain pace I believe they will sweep you off the course. I'll be honest and think you're being unrealistic. Husband is running the marathon and likes this website I'm linking below. You might have better luck with experienced runners of that particular marathon if you post your question there.

Whew... I've been a triathalete for several years and have finished as high as second in a major marathon (albeit 8 years and 40 pounds ago)...

You will have difficulty completing the distance unless you build your stamina and endurance. Walking 26.2 miles isn't easy, and comparing it to a 3.1 mile run is... well it's no comparison. Also, 20 minutes isn't good preparation for a "walk" which will take in excess of 5 hours. With your current conditioning lactic acid will build in you muscles around the 8th to 10th miles. This is typical of those who don't train for longer distances prior to a race.

You've got a month... walk for 2 hours four days a week and then do your best to complete a 10 mile slow jog on the 5th day. Rest two days. Eat lots of complex carbs (pastas) and lay off of simple sugars (candy and soda). Drink a shitload of water... starting now. When I finish a marathon chaffing is HOOOOOORRRIBLE... You can minimize this by making sure that you are shaved. By the time you finish you will be severely dehydrated. If your shirt isn't tight you will chaffe around the nipples and some people actually bleed from there regardless. It's happened to me... Florida is hot and sticky still down near Orlando. Buy some very light clothing (a tight fitting synthetic fabric tank top, and some synthetic fabric short shorts). Trust me... late in the event this will help. SPF 50 or higher sun screen, sun glasses, and an IPOD with headphones... you will be out there for a while. It wouldn't hurt to lay in a tanning bed a few days a week leading up that also... this will help you avoid burning... as SPF 50 only protects for 50 minutes... You'll still be baking for 4 more hours.

Make sure to rest for three days prior to the event. Only stretching...

Oh yeah... Those "Jogs" should be non-impact if possible. Do them on a treatmill or if need be at a rubberized track. Running on concrete returns a force to your legs equal to 6X your body weight. There is no need to add stress to them prior to a race, and as I said, no caffeine. It is a dehydrator and is counterproductive to your goals.

Best of Luck to you.

Entering this marathon equates to eating an elephant in one sitting.

You ain't trained, so don't do it.

If they have a shorter distance like 5K or 5 miler or 10k, walk that, but don't try to walk 26 miles 385 yards with the amount of training you claim.

Good Luck

Possibly, but why would you? What would it prove? That you can slog through at the back of the pack?

Sorry, I have a problem with people who don't put forth an honest effort to train and respect the distance.

You dishonor Phidippides, yourself, and the rest of us who pay our dues and put in the miles.

I would pack in some long walks no, at least 5 miles, I would say, to make sure you can hack it. Of course, do the whole eat right, drink water thing, but also get some GOOD shoes.
