I'm not satisfied by "it's not the holy land." God could have made Cyprus or any other island the "land of milk and honey" and called it the Holy Land and everything would have been fine. That way the island of Israel wouldn't have been invaded 500 times by the Assyrians, Babylonians, ect. The Persians might have been trouble with their ships, but it still would have been a better plan.

PS the Israelites wouldn't have intermarried with the unpure tribes in my plan either.

This you have to blame on the humans. Why? Because the god that they made up in their own image was pretty dumb, like a human of that time.

Because neither Cyprus or "some Greek island" are the Holy Land.

I think you are to be commended for digging into the deeper things of the Bible very few people recognize their spititual need, however JESUS said HAPPY are those conscience of their spiritual need since the kingdom of the Heavens belongs to them.(matt 5:3). No one really knows the answer to such questions except to say that the Israelites were GOD's chosen people at that time , as they entered into a covenant with him to do all that he had commanded and had they kept their vow to him they would always have had his favor and protection, however they turned to worshipping other gods (false gods baal, murduck etc.) and god viewed this as spiritual fornication and many times through the prophets he pleaded with them to come back to him and turn away from false worship and loose conduct and for a while they would but then they'd give in to their loose conduct again. You may not have thought of it this way but GOD has used other nations throughout history to carry out his divine judgments against ungodly peopple and the same is true of the Israelites. The point is this many times GOD demonstrated how he could deliver them from whatever the situation may be, and many times he helped them to overcome their enemies, Joshua with GOD's help was able to fight over thirty kings in a period of roughly six years so that they may take possession of the promised land, and he was victorious only because he sought direction and guidence from GOD. IN conclusion, GOD has a certain standard by which he does things and he expects those who truly want to serve him to adhere closely to those standards to the best of our imperfect ability, and if we do so we will have his favor, remember one thing GOD is never the source of hardship but he will allow things to put our integrity to the test, so the question is how will we fair under trial? There is no doubt that GOD allowed these things to befall the nation of Israel for a reason and he is under no obligation to explain it to us, but because of his tremendous love for mankind he has had this wonderful book (the Bible) written and preserved for our benefit, so that we can see the outcome of those who applied his cousel and that of those who did not. The same holds true for us today .

Read the Book of Lamentations. God put Israel in a dangerous place to prove that he might protect them and also punish them should they turn away from him.

Because God caused the other armies to invade them. Didn't you read the parts where God was angry with them? How did you miss that?

Because it wasn't the land of milk and honey there. It was and remains to this day the centerpoint of the world in religion.
