i.e. have they "realized the Self" whatever that might mean exactly...because it can mean different things for different people presumably.

Enlighten means to give spiritual or intellectual insight to.
Based on this definition, I think both the Dalai Lama and the Pope are enlightened.
By "realized the self" do you mean self-realization? Self-realization is the complete fulfillment of the self or full development of one's own talents, capabilities, etc.
I doubt that many people ever reach complete self-realization but, once again, I think that both men have reached a certain stage of self-realization.
Although I am sure self-realization has significantly different meanings in Christianity and Buddhism.

The culture and religion of the Dalai Lama encourages enlightenment.
It may be argued that Catholicism does not. Certainly individual Catholics may achieve an experience of enlightenment, as may anyone in any faith. What they do with it is different for each person.

the pope is not enlightened if he was he would leave catholicism. also he was a nazi so i doubt he'd become enlightened in this lifetime or the next. he'll get reborn as an animal. The Dalai Lama could be enlightened and most likely is as he is seen as the reincarnation of Buddha.

I think the Dalai Lama is enlightened.
I don't think the pope would know "enlightenment" if it bit his ***.

To me enlightenment is a state of being. In this beingness one is free from suffering. Since suffering is subjective to an individuals experience or awareness it is not possible for an outsider to know with certainty if another is entlightened.
Many speak wise words, but what do we truly know of their inner?
