I can't find any history on the naming of this central African country.
Chad is supposedly Celtic for warrior.

And, perhaps surprisingly, the personal name Chad isn't Celtic but Anglo-Saxon. It's the modern form of Ceadda (proncounced Chadda), the name of a 7th century English saint.
