My grandmother told me that it is a mistake. The rest of my family feels that it should be illegal and says that I will ruin my son's life. I know that I am doing what's best for my son, but they put so much doubt in my mind. I don't know what to do about their doubts. Should I even care. I know that I want their support.

Here is the deal - they will fight you tooth and nail because you are going against the normal expectations of society. You need to change their minds, and you can do that by doing an excellent job with your child. My mother and mother in law were both vehemently anti-homeschooling. Wouldn't you know, 3 years into it, I was asked to speak at my alma mater college to a group of secondary education students. My mother in law came along (I was working that day and she was watching my kids). The students asked her what she thought - and she went off! She was so positive about homeschooling, how great it was for my kids and our entire family. I couldn't believe my ears! It made me sooo happy!

My mother has told me many times what a great thing she thinks homeschooling is NOW.

So do a great job, and it will turn their heads around !

Good luck!

Don't listen to the naysayers. As long as you are confident in your abilities to educate your child, stick by your guns! Despite the comments posted here, homeschooled children ted to have no socialization problems, and receive a superior education compared to public school. Most of the recent winners of the national spelling bee and national geography bee have been homeschooled. Homeschooled kids go to college at higher rates than public school kids.

Just make sure you getinvolved in you local homeschooling association. You will get support from other parents, as well as opportunities for field trips, etc.

Good luck, God bless, and stay strong!

Plain and simple... he is YOUR son, not theirs, Tell them all to keep their opinions and comments to theirselves that you will raise your son as doing what you feel is best for him...not what they think is better. I would like to homeschool my children but I do not have the patience for that so good for you for being able to have that kind of patience. And don't let anyone ever tell you you are depriving him of a social life or whatever because it is simply not true. If you allow him to, often times homeschooled children are still able to participate in sports, there for getting social interaction with other children their age. So, just tell them to all bug off (to put it nicely) and nevermind what they say or think. You will do what is best for your son, don't let idiotic people put doubts in your mind. You are doing a great job.

Yes, it's good that you care about your families opinions on home schooling but if they don't support you, then that's all there is to it. I am against home schooling because I believe that all children need to be around other students to learn to socialize with the other children. There are the school field trips, school parties, family night, etc. that the child misses out on. If a child is homeschooled, they grow up not knowing how to handle certain situations in life. Kids need to be exposed to many things that are happening around them, so they can be taught those rights & wrongs as well.

It doesn't matter what they think. He is your son, so do what you feel is best for him.
Just make sure you have really researched homeschooling, and your states requirements for it. And then do what you think is right.
I started homeschooling my children, after I saw the effects the public school system had on them. I pulled my oldest 2 children out when they were in 2nd and 3rd grade. And it has been the best thing for them.

I know many kids today that are very successfull and handle themselves very well, if not moreso than those who attended public school. So long as you are able to consistently give your child/children what they need, attend homeschooler activity field trips, I think you will be just fine.

There is always going to be opposition when you go agaisnt the grain. Do what YOU think is right, and best wishes.

Ignore what they say and do what is best for your kid.

Homeschooling does not mean that a kid will be socially deprived. There are clubs (often made specifically for homeschooled children), sports, camps and countless other activities that let kids be social.

I think homeschooling is great because kids learn more, and get (usually) a far better education than public schools can provide.

I wish I had been homeschooled.

My son has had many problems in school and I wish I could home school him. He is your child and no matter what anyone thinks you should trust your gut. Just let your ffamily know everyone has their own opinion but he is YOUR child not theirs. Just make sure you get him involved in sports or some type of activity through the community so he can make friends.

Do what you think is best, you are the parent. Just make sure that your child gets out to meet friends and build skills with dealing with other children.
