I am in the 8th grade and learned to ski in the 5th grade. I live in missouri and have been skiing in colorado once. This year i wanted to take up snowboarding because my dad and i want to travel to colorado and i thought it would be fun to try snowboarding....

so how long do you think it'll take to learn? i know everyone is different. if it helps, i took on skiing very quickly, to my surprise. keep in mind it'll be on more of ice than real snow. I don't think i'll have days to learn, if at most, half a day because we don't have passes and probably can't pay for additonal days.

also, aside from the boots and snowboard, is dressing any different than i would for skiing?

I forgot to mention... when i go to colorado, if i decide to try snowboarding i'll defenitely take lessons again on real snow. but i don't know if i want to waste my time trying to learn if i wouldn't be able to enjoy my trip.

Dress the same as skiing. It usually takes at least 3 full days to start turning and linking turns, but that doesn't mean you won't learn a lot if you are on a board for 4 hours.

Ice is harder on a snowboard than on skiis and is not the ideal conditions to learn to snowboard - falling on your butt will hurt a lot more if the runs are that hard. Best conditions for learning are cold temperatures with groomed or skier packed snow.

Good Luck

You can dress pretty much the same as you would on skis, just make sure you have a good range of motion in the hips and the neck, since you look over your shoulder instead of straight ahead.

I hate snowboarding on ice, and it's terrible to try to learn on it. You're going to fall a lot more than you would otherwise, and the falls are going to hurt a lot more. I still fall a lot snowboarding on ice.

If there is a lot of ice and you don't do well, don't get discouraged. Try getting out there again on better conditions and the difference will be amazing.

picking up snowboarding after skiing is a lot easier than just learning from scratch. one thing you may wanna be weary of is the ice, since with sboarding you rely more on catching the snows edge (where as with skiing you just make a v-shape with your skis to stop) so it may be tougher. i think a week should be enough time to pick up the gist of it

also your clothing is exactly the same, although helmets for skiing and boarding often differ

well, the styles of clothes is different form skiing, but that doesn't matter at all, it's just looks. definetly wear wrist guards! i broke both of my wrists my first time! and a helmet would be helpful! half a day is only enough for maybe the bunny hill.

You will be spending more time sitting in the snow because once you get off the lift, you will have to strap your other foot in. You should wear a waterproof fleece or some long sleeve thing under your jacket.
