When the original glofish came on the market, California chose to ban them because they were a genetically modified organism. Evidently, there have been problems with people releasing unwanted captive fish (various species) and plants, and these have become a nuisance in many areas. Add to that the genetic modification, and no one wanted to take the risk at the time of these getting into the environment. There was talk a few years ago about lifting the ban, but as far as I know it never went through the state government.

Pet stores in California won't be able to stock them, nor would any online company ship them to a California address because of this. If you attempt to get them through a neighboring state and you get caught, you would have to surrender the fish, and possibly would be fined.

This link has a link within for a place to contact about repealling the law: http://www.glofish.com/california.asp

ADDITION: I don't think either of us that answered personally have anything against glofish. I owned three of the original type (before they were as colorful as the ones that are out now) when I was teaching as an example of genetic engineering to show my classes. And these were originally developed as a way of monitoring water quality - the color would only appear when the fish became stressed.

I think we were just pointing out why you won't be likely to find anyone who would stock them or ship them to you because of the stand taken by your state legislators.

Seeing as it is illegal to import or even posess Glofish in California, it would be easiest to not break the law, and instead, keep normal Zebra, Leopard, Blue, or Giant Danios...

Soop Nazi

EDIT: These Glofish have not been reported (as of yet) to be populating US waters, likely because their colors are practically neon signs for predators. California banned ALL genetically altered fish because of a previous concern regarding genetically altered salmon (for a food source) that they feared could outcompete the native salmon. The CA government offered to allow the genetically altered Danios under the condition that the company that "constructed" these fish (Yorktown Technologies) would perform an "ecological review", but the company refused under the pretense that it was too expensive to invest in such research.

EDIT 2: I have no problems with Glofish... if I didn't live in So Cal, I'd probably have a nice school of them...
