I come in to work and try to be in a good mood as often as possible. I like to be friendly towards other coworkers as well as work hard. I'm pretty outgoing and it makes me feel good to see others smile. Recently, it seems my bosses have something against me. It seems they are jealous of how other coworkers confide in me. I work very hard yet nothing seems to be good enough. I swear it's like they have it out for me. It's really bringing me down. How do I get on their good side without changing how I act towards others?

Currently being a supervisor and having been a business owner with several employees in the pass, several comments in you questions give me cause to wonder what the other side of the story is. No boss in their right mind would have a problem with an employee who was a hard worker and who increase morale. When you say "friendly toward coworkers-make them smile-outgoing" what I hear is someone who is spending a lot of time talking, and entertaining coworkers. Since you mentioned that you work hard 2 times you seem to be over stressing this part. Maybe your perception of how hard you work is not shared by your supervisors. Take your question and this response to them and ask for their feed back.
BTW trust me bosses have enough to do without having their employees "confiding" in them about all of their problems

Been there.

There's usually no choice other than changing jobs. These things are usually top down. Microsoft is known for abusive work environment. Google is known for very comforing envirnment. It is also known that the founders have the same personality.

I've lived and worked in NYC all my life. And it seems that certain city are often worse than other when it comes to this kind of boss. That is not to say that you will NOT find a decent boss in crappy NYC and you won't find a bad boss in another.

But it seems more likely in cities like NYC where people are nasty to begin with. Give them power and they go nuts.

Good Luck

P.S. My wife just survived a crazy boss. Finally after enough people left the company, they "let the manager go." Then they go and hire another manager just as bad. Go figure.

Why don't you ask to meet with your bosses and ask them what you can do to improve your performance. Maybe your perception is off and your bosses aren't jealous but feel that maybe the staff should be talking to them if there are problems as they are the ones that can make changes. Don't assume that they are out to get you. Maybe they think you need improvement or the others need to focus on their jobs instead of taking time to confide in you instead of working. Maybe the bosses think you and others are wasting time or visiting when you should be working. Talk to your supervisor to see what you can do to improve. You will need to be sincere. Good Luck..

You have to change the way you act, or quit. You may inadvertently be stirring up trouble. What you perceive as others confiding in you, your bosses my perceive as rabble rousing or bad mouthing.

You can't just get on their good side. That requires trust which would have to be earned. Which means you'll have to curb your willingness to listen to others. It may not seem so innocent to them.

Pay attention to how people are acting. Doen't be very talkative and be carefull of who you confide in about this. Just listen to what others are saying. you might pick up on something.

Concentrate on your work, be positive. Don't go to work to socialize.
