How long does it take to get a transcript of your income tax return? Does it explain what were the attachments? I don't need the1040 form or the actual return. What exactly does the transcript mention or show?

If you can get away with less, you can call IRS at 800-829-1040 and request a return transcript that shows line by line entries. It should serve your purposes and is free. If you must have a copy of the original return, it will cost you $39 and can be ordered using form 4506.

Your tax preparer should keep a copy of all his clients returns in some form as a matter of good business practice. I have copies of all the returns I prepared for my clients. They are not on paper, but can be downloaded and printed if needed.

If you need a copy of the return with attachment for school loan or bank loan even if you r tax preparer had a copy it would not be accepted by the school or bank, they want a copy of what you actually filed and accept by IRS.
Download form 4506-T Return Transcript, a fax number is provided for you or and address IRS usually sends you the transcript within 20 days, you can also request the transcript to be sent to your school or bank. A transcript is accepted at all bank/schools etc. It is a line by line of all information listed on your filed income tax return.
If you need the actual copy of the tax return the fee is $39 and could take up to 60 days to receive a copy.
You can call IRS at 1-800-829-1040, but that is TAX LAW and the wait to get thru could be lenghty up to 30 minutes on hold, before you get a person.
I personally would request the transcript.

The computer transcript consists of the lines of the tax return that the IRS needed to process your tax return.

It doesn't include the W-2, attached statements, or every single line of each schedule. If you you tell us what you are looking for, we could tell you if the transcript will include it.

My own personal advice to you: Don't go back to that particular preparer again. It is very unprofessional to not keep copies of the work they do, and frankly I wouldn't trust him/her to do it right because of it.

Find where you put it last year.

You always need to keep copies of your tax returns.
