I am a male. My range is fairly low. Say you were looking at keyboard I can sing from the lowest C, to the D after Middle C. So I can sing C, D, E, F, G, A, B, C, D, E, F, G, A, B, C, D. I obviously can sing the sharps in between too. What is my range?

This all assumes that you are identifying the notes you are singing correctly. I'm reading here that you have two octaves below middle C and only one step above middle C.

There are two things here that are related but very different. One is what is the technical classification of your voice (fach), the other is which part in a choir would your voice be in.

1) to determine whether you are a tenor, baritone, or bass (and what type), we consider more than just your range. It's also about the tone quality (light, dark, heavy, etc..) and where your voice is fullest. You need to see a qualified teacher to determine that. There are all sorts of voice types and it's not something one can really describe online; it just has to be heard.

2) which part to sing, in simplest terms:
* Tenors start one octave below middle C on "low C" and go almost two octaves. (you can't get anywhere near this high)
* Baritones start on G to B below low C and go about two octaves. (you're missing a big part of the upper range here and can go way lower)
* Basses start one octave below low C (where you describe your bottom) and sing upward to about F above middle C (you're missing a little upper range for a traditional bass part). The bass-baritone (lyric bass) part would only get down to that very low E.

If you have identified your voice correctly then you are indeed a bass and may well be what is called a dramatic bass and possibly even a basso profundo. Either are rare voices and you would benefit from seeing a qualified voice teacher to see what sort of instrument you have at your disposal.

You can check this -- can you sing down with Harold Reid of The Statler Brothers or Richard Sterban of The Oak Ridge Boys? They're basses and the dramatic bass type.

Your vocal range would look like this: C2 to D4. As for your voice type, you are indeed a bass. Also, depending on how low you can sing under your C2 comfortably, you can be a basso. A basso is the lowest of all voice types. I could never sing that low, and I'm a male with a vocal range of G#3 to Bb6. My voice type is lyric coloratura soprano, but most people would say the term sopranist.

You are a bass, the lowest of the male ranges (tenor, baritone and bass). With training you may move up slightly into the baritone range, where your high notes would be G or A above middle C.

You are not an alto.

'Well, your musical 'range' actually refers to the notes that you can hit, so you have 'technically' just named off your own range. ;) If you mean the actual name of the different types of voices, though, then it sounds like you are a bass...., but bear in mind that that's unlikely unless you are in your late teens or older, and you should probably speak with a music teacher if you want to know for sure.

And to the 'trained opera teacher', you should be ashamed of yourself for rating his voice without actually hearing him.... as it is hypothetically possible he might be not quite sure yet of which notes he is hittting exactly. I happen to have a good female baritone (a range usually only achievable by males), and there are also some males who can sing alto....even all the way up to soprano, if they are very young boys. It's also possible for some people with well-developed voices to be able to sing in more than one 'range', so you are really not impressing me very much.
