Go to the control panel and click on Performance and Maintenence then click the Power Options. Click the Hibernate tab and check the box. Then go back and set all the settings onder the Power Schemes tab and under the advanced tab as well. Just set them all to the setting you prefer.

When you shut down you get 3 choices. stand by, Turn Off and Restart. Hold down shift and stand by will switch into hibernate mode. Some systems of xp do not work with this method. Try it and see if this works
