So today, I got caught stealing. It was stupid and irresponsible and I shouldn't of stole a measly $27 but I did. I got caught, the store wants me charged to the full extent of the law, which since I'm an adult, is jail time I believe. The cops however, thought I was just a good kid, that did something wrong and got caught. The cops said "yes sir, you are under arrest. However, we wont lock you up since you're being cooperative. We are going to charge you for a misdeamenor and you will have to go to court."
Anyone know whats going to happen? I'm so scared, especially since I want to join the military. I don't know what's going to happen at court, obviously I'm going to plead guilty. But I want to know, whats the worst that I can be dealt? And do I need a lawyer if I'm just gonna plead guilty?

It's best to get at least a court-appointed attorney just so that you have help if anything goes wrong. But that's completely up to you.
Assuming this is your first offense, the worst you should face would be probation (probably unsupervised, which basically means you aren't in any trouble unless you do something illegal again) and you'll have to pay the court fees. Depending on where you live, they range from $50 on the low end to about $150 on the high end, roughly. If it's something you can't afford, you can work out a payment plan.
Don't worry, this isn't something that's going to haunt you forever or anything and it shouldn't affect your military future. Good luck in court! :)

Talk to a lawyer. Penalties vary from state to state but if you can keep your record clean you would be better off. If you are going to join the service soon you may be able to have the charges dropped if you join as part of a plea agreement. A lawyer might be able to help you make the plea but there are way too many variables involved and you will not get accurate advice here.
Most lawyers give free consults and for this simple type of case the fee wouldn't be that much. You can always shop around until you find a lawyer you like.

Its a misdomeanor, has to be over $50 to be a felony. The cops weren't doing you a favor, they were saving themselves from a lot of paperwork. The probably just issued you a ticket...right? Go see a lawyer, the first consultation should be free (or around $27, lol). They should be able to give you better information about the specific court you'll be appearing in and what to expect. If its your first offense you should be eligible for deferred prosecution, pay a fine and stay out of trouble for a year and they'll drop the charges.

If you have a clean record, you will probably be sentenced to probation. I would suggest talking to a lawyer before pleading guilty, as your lawyer can often talk to the prosecutor and get you a better deal than if you just plea guilty to the original charge. This SHOULDN'T keep you out of the military, but you will have to have completed all of your probation requirements BEFORE you can enter the military.
Additionally, if you ask your recruiter to talk to the court, they may also go easier on you; while it is technically illegal for a recruiter to make a deal so you go into the military instead of having a crime go on your record, if the recruiter talks to the judge, he or she may be less harsh in sentencing if you don't want to pay for a lawyer.

That amount is a misdemeanor, not a felony. You will be ordered to make restitution and pay court costs and receive probation. Ask that adjudication be withheld. That way, after your probation, you won't have a record. I'm assuming that this has taught you not to steal.

Why'd you steal it in the first place? I mean, dang! But you should have to face those future charges against you because if you stole a penny worth of something, stores aren't meant to steal from. They are for buying! 27 dollars less for the people who work at the store. Anyways, don't be scared. Just be prepared to what faces you. Good luck in court.

Get a lawyer! Don't even think about going to court without one. If you do not have the money to pay, sell your car, sell your stupid iPod and other toys and get a lawyer.
You can have a public defender, but it's not nearly as good as having your own lawyer. It will cost you several thousand dollars, but it's worth it.
