Are they only holding onto the Christian label to avoid social disapproval?

I don't know you'd have to ask them individually as it would be hard to generalize. My parents are liberal christians and if they wanted to be an atheist such as I am they wouldn't receive much flack because I don't. However, we are from what is generally a more liberal part of America and most of the christians up here are either liberal or moderate conservatives. To find many ultra-conservatives up here is rare.

No. My family isn't Christian. I've been a Christian for less than ten years. Having the "Christian" label doesn't really mean anything to me.

I choose to be a Christian because I want to follow Christ. Social labels, such as "liberal", don't have anything to do with it.

I'd suggest you worry about your own faith and not the beliefs of others.
