What do you guys think, would I fit in with the City of 'Greenville' SC? I know in New York, sounding English, well people would barely know, or care - as there are 100's of cultures/races/religions there.
I had vague ideas of going here you see, but some American people joke about 'Southern types' - saying the are inbred, and 'dumb', violent and unevolved. Surely this is just a joke, yes?
Are they so bad? Would being from England make me a target for racial abuse from whites as well as African Americans when they hear my voice? (well spoken English accent).
I'm hoping people don't care at all where you come from, or your voice, but a few people have said to me that South Carolina is 'worse than Texas' when it comes to reactionary views/behaviour.
So American people, please tell me that 'Greenville', SC, isn't so bad. Personally I like the diversity American offers, and I respect different cultures and want to engage with them - all races too.
Many thanks in advance.

I'm in Virginia, also part of the south. As with everywhere else in the world, there are bad neighborhoods and good ones. In Virginia, we have quite a large ex-pat community of English. Many came because of our horse community and because fox hunting is still popular. There are English pubs, groceries and the like.
Southern people are not in a rush. They tend to be very "laid back" and slow to anger on the whole. They have a great sense of humor, even when it's at their own expense and are friendly and welcoming to visitors and newcomers alike.
I relocated to the South many years ago. I love the warm temperatures, the foods, the rich heritage, the sexy drawls and the hospitality. And as to racism, you will find no more racism in the south than in any other place in the world. There are racist people everywhere, but it is no more prevalent in the south than anywhere else.
Greenville, SC is a beautiful city. The ethnic makeup is diverse. The racial makeup of the city was 62.12% White, 33.94% African American, 0.14% Native American, 1.27% Asian, 0.06% Pacific Islander, 1.37% from other races, and 1.11% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 3.44% of the population. There is a thorough entry at Wikipedia http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Greenville,_South_Carolina

I live in the Charlotte, NC area. Believe me, you'll have absolutely no problems in Greenville, SC as long as you can deal with the fact that it's a small city. The pace of life is going to be much slower than is a place like New York City or Atlanta.

There are regional rivalries all over the US. Most of them are just for fun, there is nothing serious about them. Greenville is a small town, so it is not as diverse and multicultural as New York or LA, but I am sure there are foreigners there. I can't imagine you having any problem.

Well, I'm on the east coast but sorta in the middle, so maybe I don't know that much about Southern predjudices. My feeling is that someone who's a different race -- black, maybe, or Chineese, wouldn't be quite so welcome but also wouldn't be openly disrespected or discriminated against. We HAVE come a long way since the Civil War. :D And where I live, we LOVE people with British accents. Seriously, there's a British guy at my school and all the girls think his accent is totally hot. :D A British person should have absolutely no problem.

Columbia, SC or Greenville, SC are fine, but closer to the mountains people are very very unwelcoming to newcomers and foreigners and openly hate them down to refusing doing business with all newcomers. Better choice is Columbia, Orangeburg or Charleston.

Actually America is no longer a frontier, we don't carry guns and have shoot outs in the streets anymore unless you are in New York or L.A. caught in gangland shoot outs. Southern people are very courteous and warm and not inbred. I should think you'd have fairly warm reception anywhere unless you talk about the things you just mentioned. Texas is a great state, too. Don't believe everything you hear but feel free to visit and judge it for yourself.

I think you will be fine.
Greenville is beautiful.
So, if you are ostracized by the Southerners, you can always enjoy the scenery. :)
