Don't forget, use your local library. Ours (a small one, yet) has www.ancestry.com and www.heritagequest.com, as well as periodicals, books and guidance from an experienced genealogist.

Keep good notes on where you find what: sources are very important.

NOthingusefullearned has given you some great websites. Just take one thing into consideration. Don't accept everything you see in family trees on any website, free or paid, as absolute fact. MOst of the information is not documented or poorly documented. Even when you see the same information repeatedly by many different submitters, a lot of people copy without verifying. Some merge other people's trees into theirs and upload them to various websites.

A good family tree requires documentation to back it up.

The devilishly handsome gentleman above me has the best answer, with one warning - you will have to get to dead people to start searching on the net. You won't be able to put your name somewhere and find your parents, grand parents and great gp's. Genealogy web sites hide details like birth days, spouse's names and mother's maiden names; to discourage identity theft; that and hide the fact your second cousn twice removed, Ralph, had to get married, unless little LeRoy was born 4 months premature weighing 8 lbs 3 oz.
