nowadays i see tons of my schoolmates (high school) donating just because of extra credit, and volunteering because they are FORCED to and helping out JUST because it looks good on a college application..
i thought the point of volunteering/donating was to help the world as much as possible not just using it to get into school?
what happened to people and their priorities?

it bothers me when people ask me why i'm doing more than 100 hours or they say they are only doing it because of college apps.
i am doing this because i care. is that that bad?

When you complete a college application, the emphasis is on grades, participation, extra circular activities and in some cases volunteer help. The reason is to see how well rounded the individual applicant may be other than being a " bookworm". If all one does is study, one must expect to see very high marks. If , in addition to high marks, the student was involved in many other activities, it indicates a degree of social development as well , a good attribute for one who may be away from home in the future.

No, once I volunteered just because I came back to town and had a hard time finding work for awhile. I was also not used to working, so volunteered for the experience. It was ok, but I don't really like hospitals. I just happened to have contacts there.

that is up to the judge the one who judges such acts given in times of extreme need and off the cuff expecting only to remedy the situation at hand.
I've been doing it for 35 years I knew others who had done it longer yet we all do it after awhile for the needy,AND FOR OURSELVES,other than a warm fuzzy feeling to the latter it is in vain.
