It looks as though most including myself would pick the 40D.

Me Personally would take the Canon EOS 40d because first of all Canon offers many many more lenses to choose from then Sony. And that the 40d has 1.5 fps more frames per second. Another plus is the 1.6 crop factor with the 40d you can get longer shots without smaller lenses.

And who knows how long Sony will last.

Canons been around for a long time.

Me personally would stick with Either Canon Or NIkon

good luck

Between these two, the Canon is obviously the favorite, but I would not discount the Sony out of hand. They are going to become a major player in the digital world, as is Pentax. Sony has been making pro TV cameras for eons, so we know that they can do it. The A700 is a new commitment to the prosumer/near-pro level market. It will be a niche camera for a while, but they are also introducing some stunning lenses that will get your attention.

However... I agree that once you get into this range of camera, you need to feel the thing in your own hands as this is the one thing that nobody but you can test for.

The Canon 40D (and the equivalent Nikon) are entry professionally accepted systems. The Sony is not. I don't keep track of the entry level DSLR camera prices, but unless there is a great price differential and you are on a limited budget, buy the Canon.

IMO the Sony wins. It has Super Anti-Shake in the camera body and you can use every MINOLTA MAXXUM AF lens made since 1985.

if i were you, i would go handle them both, in my experience the software/human interface is very different and you may find that one is far easier for you to use than the other
